At the regatta Saturday the father of one of the team members brought along his tuba and played the school fight song every time one of the boats from K-state raced. His quirky hobby has become a crew tradition.
People like this always amaze me with their lack of inhibitions. I am far too introverted to ever do something that would draw so much attention to myself, but I do admire those brave enough to do what they enjoy regardless of what others might think.
It is the people who are daring enough to march to a different beat than the rest of the crowd that do the inventing and creating in this world. Those who dream original dreams are the ones who can bring change to life. We need the characters. The characters add color, spontaneity and humor to the world, improving it for us all.
Not all of us were meant to toot our horn quite so boldly, but we all do have something in us that is unique and sets us apart from the crowd. If we give ourselves permission to share that part of us, we might be surprised to find it well received. If fewer of us strove to fit in and began rejecting conformity, maybe those who will never fit in would begin to find acceptance. Maybe the characters have already figured all this out and are waiting for the rest of us to catch up.
