We’ve lived here forever. I’ve always intended to make jelly from the quinces that grow in my yard, but life distracts me and I forget to watch for them to ripen. Year after year the perfect moment arrives and I miss it distracted by my busyness. The quinces fall to the ground, wasted potential. Which other of life’s sweet treats do I miss, too busy to notice?

I have no idea what a quince even tastes like…what is it similar to?
Ha! That is just the thing. I keep wanting to make the jelly to find out. By the time they are ripe I have forgotten to pick them.
It looks like a cross between an apple and a pear, but everything I read says it is more bitter. One recipe I saw used one cup sugar for one cup boiled down quince juice. So, you couldn’t make a steady diet out of it. But it is something I want to try at least once if nothing more than to satisfy my curiosity. If I can maintain my focus long enough to try it this year, I will let you know how it is.
Seasons have been like that for me – I’ve thought over and over again for years how I want to get outside more and experience the changing seasons (New England’s seasons are distinct and different and one of the main reasons I love living here!) Having begun my walking “journey” at the beginning of the year, I feel like I have experienced spring as {maybe} never before! I’m so glad to be slowing down and taking in more of all that’s around me – will stay tuned for what becomes of the Quince this year!
Oh, I long to visit New England. Like you I must have my distinct seasons. Somehow marking the passage of time helps me appreciate it more. I am going to try really hard to catch those quinces!
I have never even heard of a quince. But I think you are adventurous for even thinking of making jelly from them!
I think God places on our hearts what He doesn’t want us to miss. We just need to be still and hear His guidance. Maybe He’s calling you to make jelly.
Or at the very least to look outside myself to what bounty surrounds me!
I’ve heard of quince before, but I have never tasted it. We are lucky to have raspberry bushes in our yard. Pretty soon they will be ready to pick. What I like about raspberries, besides eating them, is picking them because it gets me outside on a day or evening when I might not even think about going outside. The berries always get eaten up quick and we do not even have any left to make jelly. That’s okay with me!
Oh, you are lucky. If we had raspberry bushes, it would be a miracle for them to even make it to the kitchen let alone into a jelly!
I am not an outdoorsy type in the least, and I have been so thankful for the garden the past two years for exactly the reason you are. It forces you out into the sun to soak up a little Vitamin D. It may be all in my head, but I swear I feel better for being outside.
You may miss the quinces, but I think you notice far more than you realize. You’re an observant soul, my dear.
As are you!
Perhaps you already know this, but I wonder the same thing … often.
I constantly have to remind myself to slow down and pay attention.
